Mauritius - "Tears in Heaven"

Mauritius, known officially as the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation located off the coast of the TheAfrican continent in the southwest Indian Ocean. It is a volcanic island of lagoons and palm-fringed beaches with coral reefs surrounding most of the coastline.

Mauritius is situated approximately 2400 kilometers off the South East Coast of Africa. The island covers an area of 1,865 square kilometers or 720 square miles, with 330 kilometers of coastline. Mauritius is 45km in width and 65km in length.

Mauritius is a densely populated island of around 1.2 million people. It has a reputation for stability and racial harmony among its mixed population. Mauritius is known as a plural society where all the ethnic groups present: Hindus, Muslims, Creoles, Chinese and Europeans live in peace and where all the ancestral cultures have been preserved. These features make the island a unique place in the world, and the Mauritians known for their tolerance and kindness towards all people.

Most Mauritians are bilingual being equally fluent in French and English. English is the official language, but French and Creole are widely spoken. Oriental languages also form part of the linguistic mosaic.

Port Louis, the capital of the island, has numerous attractions. The old town theatre, the international mask collection museum, the natural history museum, the post museum and the naval museum are near the harbour in Port Louis, as well as the historical government palace, which are all worthwhile visits. Mauritius is only half as big as Mallorca. There are more than 1 million people living peacefully on this island, although there are many different cultures here. Mauritius is worth a visit for many different reasons: culture, relaxation, sport, exotic, nice people and, of course, the cheap food. All these reasons make Mauritius even more perfect. A wide range of delicious diverse foods complete the picture: As well as the European cuisine there is Chinese food, Indian food and much more. Even vegetarians will love the wide variety of food. The fruit and vegetables taste so delicious that you’ll always want more. And pineapples, bananas and mangos taste better here than anywhere else. You can go on diving trips, go deep sea fishing or you can rent a sailboat, go horseback riding, water-skiing and many more activities.

Why Mauritius? Once again I ask myself this question. Mauritius is unique and welcoming; no visitor can escape its charm. No surprise then that Mark Twain remarked that God created Mauritius first and then heaven and heaven was copied from Mauritius. So what will I do, when I can no longer cope without Mauritius? I can’t imagine living anywhere else. The people are so open and endearing. However, young European women shouldn’t be too naïve and accept every invitation. The people in Mauritius know how to flirt. It’s very different to Germany. Sometimes on the beach someone takes out a guitar and plays “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton. I’ve seen it all and don’t want to miss any of these moments.

Switzerland Beauty

Switzerland enjoys a wide range of wildlife and botanical habitats. Thanks to the huge difference in altitude, climate and vegetation zones, there are many different habitats.

In the distant past the Swiss Alps were inhabited by such creatures as the cave bear, cave lion and panther, and not more than a few hundred years ago the most prolific animals found in the Alpine valleys included the lynx and wildcat, and the wolf. Periods of glaciation drove the first group from the mountains, while hunters reduced the numbers of the latter: the last wolf in Switzerland was thought to have been shot in 1947, but a handful of suspected sightings of wolves during 1999 in the Valais are under current investigation by naturalists. Hunting is still popular today, but is generally under strict controls. The Parc Naziunal Svizzer in the Lower Engadine (Swiss National Park) is a haven for numerous resident and migratory animals, since something like half of the seventy species of mammals found in Switzerland can be seen there. There are many protected areas, but the National Park (founded in 1914) in Engadine, Graubnden, is world-famous; it is also a centre for scientific research.
Alpine fauna is noted for its extreme shyness, which is why observation can be difficult, but many animals that inhabit the more remote regions of the high Alps also descend to lower altitudes.

The range of plants found in Switzerland is enormous, as one might expect in a country whose soil, habitat, climate and altitude varies from region to region and, in some cases, from one valley to the next. Bare rocks may dominate in one district, with more plant-friendly limestone in another. Habitats vary from damp grassland to semi-arctic rockface, from desert-like scree to shady woodland, from glacial moraine to the marshy fringe of a mountain lake, from a sunny cliff or stretch of limestone pavement to an acid valley bog. Each has its own specific flora.

Switzerland is famous for a few key goods: watches, chocolate, cheese, and Swiss Army knives.

Watches - Switzerland is the watch-making capital of the world, and "Swiss Made" on a watch face has long been a mark of quality. While the French-speaking regions of Switzerland are usually associated with Swiss watchmakers (like Rolex, Omega, and Patek Philippe), some fine watches are made in the Swiss-German-speaking region.

Chocolate - Switzerland may always have a rivalry with Belgium for the world's best chocolate, but there's no doubting that the Swiss variety is amazingly good. Switzerland is also home to the huge Nestlé food company. If you have a fine palate (and a fat wallet) - you can find two of the finest Swiss chocolatiers in Zurich: Teuscher (try the champagne truffles) and Sprüngli. For the rest of us, even the generic grocery store brand chocolates in Switzerland still blow away the Hershey bars found elsewhere. For a good value, try the "Frey" brand chocolates sold at Migros.

Cheese - many different regions of Switzerland have their own regional cheese speciality. Of these, the most well-known are Gruyère and Emmentaler (what Americans know as "Swiss cheese"). Be sure to sample the wide variety of cheeses sold in markets, and of course try the cheese fondue! Fondue is basically melted cheese and is used as a dip with other food such as bread. The original mixture consists of half Vacherin cheese and half Gruyère but many different combinations have been developed since.

Swiss Army knives - Switzerland is the official home of the Swiss Army Knife. There are two brands Victorinox and Wenger. Both brands are manufactured by Victorinox. Victorinox knives, knife collectors will agree, are far far superior, in terms of design, quality, functionality. The most popular Victorinox knife is the Swiss Champ which has 33 functions. Most Tourists will purchase this knife. Most shops throughout Switzerland stock Victorinox knifes, even some news agents stock them. They are excellent gifts and souvenirs.

According to me Switzerland is One of the Best Places to Visit in Europe.
